HUMANITIES

Term 2 is off to a flying start for Humanities at Sirius College Meadow Fair with all junior years settling in to explore various aspects of history. All years are getting back into the routine of productive learning and study.

In term one Year 7 students studied how we learn about the past. During this term they explored the role of historians, archaeologists and curators in discovering and preserving our history for generations to come. Our newest historians are learning to work effectively in class and are beginning to develop their skills through regular in class and at home activities. We are looking forward to developing their young minds and perhaps uncovering the next renowned historian.

Year 8 got their hands dirty exploring the age of the Vikings. They looked at the Viking homelands, the Viking sagas, weapons and armour, the life of Vikings and Viking exploration. Students have shown great interest in this perceived violent and brutal time but have discovered that there is more to the Vikings than is often shown on TV.

Finally year 9 have expanded their minds through studying the Industrial revolution and how it has shaped the modern world. They have rediscovered the inventions that changed the world and the ways in which mankind stepped out of the dark ages. Year 9 students have journeyed through 150 years of invention and discovery, looking at the life styles, work places and machines that the workers and even children had to endure to shape the world we live in today.

It’s going to be a busy term 2 for Humanities students with lots of new ideas and concepts to learn. With hard work and study we hope students will have a wider view of the world they live in and recognise that everything that has happened in the past shapes our present and the future to come.
